False SIP

False SIP was a live performance in Beijing, China completely mediated by digital and web technology in the early days of web conferencing. Using an array of webcams, DIY synthesizers, medical-grade testing equipment, projectors, busted radios, and many other unconventional instruments, Gogoj and I created an interconnected audiovisual system in the Shanstudios sound laboratory. Inside the studio, the actual performance space was nearly silent – as to not wake the neighbors. Our goal was to traverse the great (fire) wall with our improvised music, and simultaneously experiment with perhaps the best feedback/distortion pedal ever created, the Internet! All sounds were processed digitized, compressed, and virtualized. The event was exploratory in nature and will hopefully lead to greater investigation of the Internet as a viable medium for other such experimental performances.
